Bharti Airtel customers will now have to pay extra if they are making calls on Skype, viber or other apps using their mobile data packs as the operator has decided to charge standard rates for making voice calls over Internet.
Airtel said on its interview “All internet/data packs or plans shall only be valid for internet browsing and will exclude VoIP. VoIP over data connectivity would be charged at standard data rates of 4p/10KB on 3g services and 2p/10KB on 2g services”.
The popularity and business model of services such as Whatsapp, Skype and others, where users can text or make calls without having to pay extra money has been a bone of contention with telecom carries for long.
An Airtel spokeswoman said the charges will only apply to prepaid users and will be implemented soon.
